Kilimanjaro airport Guide

Kilimanjaro International Airport (airport code JRO) provides a convenient way for visitors to fly in and out of Tanzania for their climb and safari trips. It is the closest airport to Kilimanjaro, located just 40 minutes from the gateway towns of Moshi and Arusha by vehicle, which makes it easy to begin your adventure soon after you arrive.

Several international airlines operate flights to Kilimanjaro Airport, including Ethiopian Airlines, Kenya Airways, Qatar Airways and KLM. Several regional airlines fly here from local hubs, including Air Tanzania and Precision Air.Direct flights to Kilimanjaro Airport originate from only two major international hubs, Doha with Qatar Airlines and Amsterdam with KLM. There are no direct flights to Kilimanjaro from the USA or Canada.

When you arrive at Kilimanjaro Airport, you will deplane on the tarmac. Inside the building, you will need to clear immigration. There are lines for people who have their visa already and lines for people who are getting their visa on arrival. Be sure to stand in the correct queue.

Once you are through security, grab your checked baggage and head for the exit. You will be required to scan your baggage before leaving.

Popular Airports

There is a restaurant and lounge area, as well as a cafe on the second floor, for travelers to relax or grab a quick bite before their flight. The airport offers modern toilets and a few souvenir shops, including your last option for purchasing Tanzanite before you fly.

There is a currency exchange desk so you can either change some notes into Tanzanian Shillings as soon as you arrive, or you can conveniently change back any remaining cash before flying home.

You can receive a tourist visa upon arrival at JRO. Please come prepared with US dollars ($50 or $100, depending on your country of citizenship), other currencies are not recommended.

However, we suggest organizing your visa online before you travel. This is purely to save time, as waiting in line at immigration after a long flight is not very enjoyable.

Please see the official Tanzania Immigration Webpage here.

The e-visa is an efficient option for travelers to speed through immigration, allowing them to access the “Passport and Visa holders” line of Immigration upon arrival. Since you already have permission to enter Tanzania as a tourist, you can speed through immigrations and get started on your holiday.

The airport advertises free WiFi for waiting passengers, but please don’t depend on it! Some of our guests have passed through JRO when the internet was down, so be prepared for no internet, or to use your phone’s data instead of WiFi throughout the airport.

Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) Flights

The only regularly scheduled direct flights from outside Africa to JRO are from Europe (Amsterdam and Frankfurt). If you are arriving from North America or elsewhere, you will have to make a transfer in Europe, or fly into another African city and make a connection.

For most travelers, the most convenient way to get to Kilimanjaro from outside of Africa is to take the daily flight on KLM from Amsterdam AMS to JRO. The KLM flight does a loop: departs Amsterdam in the late morning and arrives Kilimanjaro in the evening (flight time is around 8 hours), short hop to Dar es Salaam DAR, then back to Amsterdam overnight. KLM and its Sky Team partners (Northwest, Continental, Delta, Air France, etc.) have connections to Amsterdam from around the globe.

If your travel dates are flexible the discount German airline Condor has some great fares from Frankfurt, Germany FRA to JRO. However, they only fly once a week, departing Frankfurt on Tuesday nights, arriving at JRO on Wednesday mornings, and returning to Frankfurt on Wednesday night. Condor has connections to Frankfurt from across Europe, as well as from several North American cities.

Another option getting to JRO is to take Ethiopian Airlines to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia ADD, and then transfer to their daily flight to JRO. Ethiopian Airlines has connections to select major cities in Europe, North America, and Asia. You can also fly into another African city, change airlines for Kilimanjaro (or take a long African bus ride!). I do not advise mixing airlines too much,it increases the risk of lost luggage and missed flights. Some of the logical cities to fly into and common routes include:

  • Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania DAR, on SWISS Airlines from Zurich ZRH, Air Emirates from Dubai DXB
  • Nairobi, Kenya NBO, on British Airways from London Heathrow LHR
  • Johannesburg, South Africa JNB, on South African Airways from Washington DC IAD, Sydney Australia SYD, Hong Kong HKG, etc.

Ethiopian Airways offers Kilimanjaro flights at good prices from Addis Ababa via Nairobi (they also fly to Europe and a handful of other international destinations). Kenya Airways offer flights to Kilimanjaro from Nairobi three times a day. The flights are operated by Precision Air, a young and dynamic Tanzanian airline with competitive prices. Precision Air also operates flights from Dar es Salaam or Zanzibar to Kilimanjaro.

Another local carrier is Air Tanzania who operates Kilimanjaro flights from Johannesburg in South Africa and also connecting flights from Kilimanjaro to Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar.

There are plenty of hotels near Kilimanjaro Airport, some of which are more like ‘motels’, or 2-star quality, offering only a bed and breakfast with the expectation that guests are departing on a flight the next day. Often, they are situated near the highway without a spectacular view or many amenities.

Guests could choose to stay in hotels in Moshi or Arusha towns before their departing flight, but they may be asked to pay additional transport costs or a private taxi to reach the airport.
